Statistics shows that genital herpes is common infection among adults. It’s a sexually transmitted infection caused by a virus that is somewhat similar to the one that causes cold sores. Genital herpes simplex virus (type 2) is highly contagious and is virtually everywhere. In fact, doctors believe that many people carry the virus, but only a few of them suffer from herpes infection. The usual mode of transmission is through sexual contact with someone who suffers from an active infection.

Painful sores on the genital region are the main characteristic of genital herpes. The infection is also characterized by flu-like symptoms (muscle pains, fever, headache, and malaise). Genital herpes is usually characterized by outbreaks of painful blisters. In men, blisters appear on the penis, usually on or around the shaft, as seen on herpes pictures men.

Typically, genital herpes start with swelling, tenderness, redness, and itchiness on the genital region. Blisters then develop in a few days. These blisters look like fluid-filled lesions or tiny red bumps which break open to become excruciating sores. After several days, crusts begin to form on the sores, marking the start of the healing process. The virus is said to retreat into the nerves and lie dormant during the remission.
