Genital Herpes Pictures, Symptoms, and Information
Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a virus that is related to another virus that causes cold sores. Studies show that genital herpes is more common in women than in men, which means that the men are more likely to pass on the infection to women than vice versa. As you may see in pictures, herpes looks like blisters on the genital region. The blisters come in clusters. That is why they are called outbreaks.
The initial outbreak is usually the worst, with blisters excruciatingly painful. There would also be painful urination and discharge in some cases. Aside from the genital region, the area around the anus may also be affected. The blisters take weeks to heal, and they may heal even without treatment. Antiviral medications, however, can reduce the duration of the infection and lessen the flu-like symptoms.
Symptoms appear about a week after the virus is contracted. First, a rash may be seen on the genital area and is followed by painful sensation. Blisters grow and break open in a few days. This is the most discomforting stage of the infection. Fever, headache, and weakness are also felt. You are most contagious during this stage, and so sexual contact with your partner should be avoided.
Healing starts once the sores dry up and a crust grows on them. A remission follows and may last for an indefinite amount of time. This means that a next outbreak may follow months after the first one. Various medical and herbal herpes treatment can reduce the number of outbreaks and alleviate symptoms once one occurs.
