Herpes on the face is a manifestation of cold sores, which is caused by the Type 1 Herpes Simplex Virus. This is a contagious virus that can cause infection to anyone who comes in contact with it. Cold sores usually manifest as blisters inside the mouth, on the lips, and on the face. Facial herpes is characterized by sores on the face, which usually occur near the lips, although there are cases in which the eyes are affected.

The virus that causes cold sores and facial herpes is generally incurable. Once you have it, you cannot eliminate it. It spreads from one person to another through direct contact. The symptoms of facial herpes are similar to the symptoms of genital herpes, although they are caused by two separate forms of viruses.

Apart from formation of painful blisters, facial herpes also causes fever, neck pain, swollen lymph nodes, and headache. Sometimes people suffer from symptoms that resemble those of influenza. This ill feeling is usually most severe during the first bout of cold sores. The blisters usually begin as itchy red patches which will become filled with fluid. The most painful part is when the blisters break open. Open sores can transmit the virus so easily. This is when you are most contagious.

You have to go to your doctor for appropriate diagnosis. Treatments usually include antiviral medications. Nonetheless, cold sores may heal without much treatment.
