Topical Treatment for Genital Herpes
There is no cure for genital herpes. That is why efforts at treating genital herpes are focused on hastening the recovery from and lessening the frequency of herpes sores. One of the methods doctors may recommend for herpes is the use of topical treatment. Genital herpes appear in the genital area and can cause a great deal of discomfort to the person infected.
Commercially available topical treatments such as Dynamiclear can help contain the contagiousness of the disease. Dynamiclear, which was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2000, prevents the herpes-causing HSV virus from fusing to cell membranes thus barring the entry of the virus into the skin.
Another topical treatment is Tromantadine. Available as a gel, it inhibits the entry of the virus into the skin by altering the their surface composition. The gel also inhibits the release of viral genetic material which the virus uses to spread and reproduce.
Zilactin, another commercially available topical treatment for genital herpes, also works as a barrier to prevent herpes sores from increasing in size and spreading to other parts of the body. Yet another topical treatment is Lipactin which has been shown to reduce both symptoms and the time needed for the healing process of the sores.
Some people opt for natural topical treatment. Genital herpes sores can be cured by using aloe juice mixed with fruit juice daily for chronic viral infections. Aloe vera has been found to have antiviral effects. Aloe gel has also been found to contain compounds which can stimulate the immune system to help the body fight the virus.
Lemon balm (melissa officinalis) has also been found to have strong antiviral qualities. Applying strong lemon balm extracts to herpes outbreaks can speed healing and prevent recurrence of outbreaks.
The Licorice root on the other hand, contains glycyrrhizin which has been found to help alleviate the pain and hasten the healing of herpes sores. Some experts recommend that along with topical treatment, licorice should be internally taken in the form of tea produce the best results. There are salves commercially available which contain glycyrrhizinic acid which one can also use.
