Understanding Treatment for Herpes Zoster

If you suffer from herpes zoster, it’s important that you find the proper treatment for this condition. Herpes zoster is also known as shingles. If you have ever had chickenpox in your life, then you are at risk for herpes zoster later in life. There is no cure for herpes zoster just like there is no cure for chickenpox.

However, there are certain types of medicines that can help with this which are known as antivirals. While these cannot cure the herpes zoster virus, they can help shorten the length and the severity of the condition and make you more comfortable when you do have an outbreak. It can also help you prevent outbreaks of herpes zoster in the future.

Three of the most common treatments used for herpes zoster are:

  1. Acyclovir (Zovirax)
  2. Famciclovir (Famvir)
  3. Valacyclovir (Valtrex)

These three treatments for herpes zoster have been the most famous because they have been known to help shorten the length of new lesions being formed and have been known to help reduce the onset of outbreaks of the herpes zoster virus.

This can also help lower the period of time that you have an outbreak of herpes zoster. For anyone who has ever suffered the pain of shingles, you can immediately see how this would be helpful. If you want relief for yourself or someone you love, it’s important to know more about the types of possible treatments out there today as well as in development for herpes zoster.

These medications have been shown to improve the symptoms of herpes zoster. There is also belief that treatment for herpes zoster can help lead to a future vaccine for this condition. This is not a far stretch as we currently have a vaccine for chickenpox. This vaccine can be the cure to shingles for people who have not had the chickenpox virus and are at risk for shingles in the future.

Now that you know about these possible treatment options for herpes zoster, you can talk with your doctor if you have concerns about your shingles and how you can find future relief. You don’t have to suffer with shingles without any type of treatment option, especially when there are many treatment options for you.
